Cultural Appropriation | Misappropriations and The ManKind Project
Right now, I should be volunteering at a New Warrior Training Adventure, a weekend event run worldwide by the ManKind Project. But a couple of weeks ago, Oct 11 to be exact, it was canceled by MKP USA. All the planned New Warrior Training Adventures, NWTAs, were canceled in the US for the rest of 2022. The cancellations were due to charges of cultural appropriation from a group of Native American elders called Spirit.
First off, let me clarify that I am a middle-aged white American man. I have no insight into what it means to be Native American, or any other race or culture for that matter. I am sharing my opinions and asking questions. I am not representing any other individual or group.
And I'm willing to be wrong about everything I think I know.
When I discovered that all NWTAs were canceled, I was shocked, disappointed, and hurt. My NWTA was back in October 2016. There was a lot of Native American ritual and ceremony, and it was presented very respectfully, honoring where they came from and giving full acknowledgment. It was stressed how much training ManKindProject (MKP) men had with the Lakota people to learn what we would be doing.
I thought cultural appropriation meant taking something from another culture and claiming it as your own. MKP never did that in anything I was involved in. Nobody in MKP claimed to have invented the sweat lodge or any other rituals I took part in. The sweat lodge seems to be the main point of contention, but it is just one of many different events that make up the NWTA weekend.
My brief research found that many cultures have used sweat lodges for purification, healing, and relaxation. Most commonly known are Native Americans, but also the Mayans, Aztecs, and across Europe as early as the 5th century. https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Sweat_lodge
MKP Statement included: "A public campaign against the ManKind Project over concerns about cultural appropriation launched in the evening of Oct 6, 2022. One aspect of the campaign encourages public protests at NWTA locations across the country. The locations of our events were published.
After assessing the content on the website, it became apparent that to proceed would put MKP participants and volunteers at risk."
America is a melting pot of hundreds of cultures. Borrowing from other cultures is inevitable; it can be positive. To me, it is the evolution of society.
Centuries ago, people came to North America and saw natives as less than.
The letter from Spirit (https://www.spiritprotection.org/letter-to-mkp) makes it clear that native people are still hurting.
To me, MKP has been trying to honor the native practices they use, but it is not seen that way by all native leaders.
You can do the right thing and still have it be the wrong thing.
Earlier this year, the ManKind Project USA published a statement, “Acknowledging and Evolving Our Relationship with Indigenous Peoples and Practices.”
Note: NWTA events continue to happen outside of the US.

I should be volunteering at a
5
00:00:16,100 --> 00:00:19,800
new Warrior training Adventure.
It's a weekend event run by the
6
00:00:19,800 --> 00:00:23,700
mankind project.
But a couple weeks ago, October
7
00:00:23,700 --> 00:00:27,600
11th to be exact, it was
canceled by mkp USA.
8
00:00:28,300 --> 00:00:32,700
All the planned new Warrior
training Adventures NW Tas were
9
00:00:32,700 --> 00:00:36,400
canceled in the United States,
for the rest of 2022.
10
00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:40,100
The cancellations were due to
charges of cultural
11
00:00:40,100 --> 00:00:43,600
appropriation from a group of
Native American Elders, called
12
00:00:43,600 --> 00:00:46,800
spirit.
Now, since I have talked about
13
00:00:46,800 --> 00:00:51,400
and recommended the nwt a often
on this show and just two
14
00:00:51,400 --> 00:00:56,300
episodes ago, episode 275
regular guy chat with Ken, my
15
00:00:56,300 --> 00:01:00,100
guests can shared his excitement
about going to this weekend, the
16
00:01:00,100 --> 00:01:04,200
one that should be happening
right now because of all that I
17
00:01:04,200 --> 00:01:07,000
felt it was important to address
this.
18
00:01:07,900 --> 00:01:11,000
I had considered doing a panel
of men coming together or
19
00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:13,500
finding an expert on cultural
appropriation.
20
00:01:13,900 --> 00:01:17,900
But in the End, I decided to
share what I'm struggling with
21
00:01:17,900 --> 00:01:21,900
because whenever I do that, I
always find that other people
22
00:01:21,900 --> 00:01:26,600
are feeling the same way, okay?
But first off, let me clarify,
23
00:01:26,600 --> 00:01:29,200
that I am a middle-aged white
American.
24
00:01:29,700 --> 00:01:33,500
I have no insight into what it
means to be Native American or
25
00:01:33,500 --> 00:01:35,500
any other race or culture for
that matter.
26
00:01:36,200 --> 00:01:39,000
I'm sharing my opinions and
asking questions.
27
00:01:39,600 --> 00:01:42,600
I'm not representing any other
individual or group.
28
00:01:43,400 --> 00:01:49,000
And perhaps most importantly,
I'm willing to be wrong about
29
00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:54,000
everything that I think I know.
When I discovered that all nwt
30
00:01:54,000 --> 00:02:00,900
A's were canceled, I was shocked
disappointed and hurt my nwt.
31
00:02:00,900 --> 00:02:04,500
A was a phenomenal growth
experience for me.
32
00:02:05,200 --> 00:02:10,199
It was back in October of 2016.
Now there were a lots of Native
33
00:02:10,199 --> 00:02:13,700
American ritual and ceremony and
it was presented very
34
00:02:13,700 --> 00:02:17,800
respectfully, and honoring where
they came from and getting full
35
00:02:17,800 --> 00:02:20,400
acknowledgement.
It was stressed, how much
36
00:02:20,400 --> 00:02:24,600
training the mankind Men had
with the Lakota people to learn,
37
00:02:24,600 --> 00:02:27,700
what would be doing?
After hearing the cancellation
38
00:02:27,700 --> 00:02:31,800
news, my first thought was that
all I had been told that my nwt
39
00:02:31,800 --> 00:02:36,000
a was a lie or perhaps all the
details of training in the
40
00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:38,800
handing down from tribes wasn't
accurate everywhere across the
41
00:02:38,800 --> 00:02:42,200
country.
I thought cultural appropriation
42
00:02:42,200 --> 00:02:45,300
meant taking something from
another culture and claiming it
43
00:02:45,300 --> 00:02:49,600
as your own mkp.
Never did that in anything that
44
00:02:49,600 --> 00:02:53,100
I was involved.
Nobody and mkp claimed to have
45
00:02:53,100 --> 00:02:56,200
invented the sweat lodge or any
other rituals that I took pardon
46
00:02:56,800 --> 00:03:00,000
and the sweat lodge seems to be
the main point of contention but
47
00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:03,100
it is just one of many different
events that make up the entire
48
00:03:03,100 --> 00:03:07,700
nwt a weekend.
And my brief research found that
49
00:03:07,700 --> 00:03:10,300
many cultures have used, sweat
lodges for purification,
50
00:03:10,300 --> 00:03:13,500
healing, and relaxation, and
most commonly known are the
51
00:03:13,500 --> 00:03:17,400
Native Americans but also the
Mayans, the Aztecs and across
52
00:03:17,400 --> 00:03:19,300
Europe.
As early as the 5th Century.
53
00:03:19,400 --> 00:03:24,100
This proof of sweat lodges Now,
in mkp statement about the
54
00:03:24,100 --> 00:03:27,600
cancellation said, a public
campaign against the mankind
55
00:03:27,600 --> 00:03:30,600
project, over concerns about
cultural appropriation launched
56
00:03:30,600 --> 00:03:33,200
in the evening of October 6th
2022.
57
00:03:33,800 --> 00:03:37,500
One aspect of the campaign
encourages public protests at
58
00:03:37,500 --> 00:03:39,600
nwt a locations across the
country.
59
00:03:40,100 --> 00:03:43,900
The locations of our events are
published after assessing the
60
00:03:43,900 --> 00:03:46,900
content on the website.
It became apparent that to
61
00:03:46,908 --> 00:03:50,000
proceed would put mkp
participants and volunteers at
62
00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:54,900
risk.
So the events will cancelled out
63
00:03:54,900 --> 00:03:59,100
of concern of clashes of
protests of making me, you know,
64
00:03:59,900 --> 00:04:03,900
what should be a really peaceful
support of space, not that at
65
00:04:03,900 --> 00:04:07,000
all.
So, you know how to unpack this,
66
00:04:07,300 --> 00:04:09,900
I thought, well, let's start
with a definition of cultural
67
00:04:09,900 --> 00:04:12,500
appropriation.
And this is really the first
68
00:04:12,500 --> 00:04:14,700
challenge that there's no legal
definition.
69
00:04:14,700 --> 00:04:18,200
This is one is one no definition
that everybody agrees to because
70
00:04:18,200 --> 00:04:20,800
this is not a crime, right?
It's a relatively.
71
00:04:20,899 --> 00:04:24,600
Recent term in society.
But here's ago, his, the most
72
00:04:24,600 --> 00:04:27,900
General thing I could find
cultural appropriation, is the
73
00:04:27,900 --> 00:04:31,500
inappropriate or unacknowledged
adoption of an element or
74
00:04:31,500 --> 00:04:34,800
elements of one culture or
identity by members of another
75
00:04:34,800 --> 00:04:37,900
culture, or identity.
This can be controversial when
76
00:04:37,900 --> 00:04:40,800
members of a dominant culture
appropriate from Minority
77
00:04:40,800 --> 00:04:43,400
cultures.
So appropriate is just to take
78
00:04:43,400 --> 00:04:46,400
it right to take it and claim it
as yours, which is kind of what
79
00:04:46,400 --> 00:04:49,900
I thought.
But again I thought cultural
80
00:04:49,900 --> 00:04:53,300
appropriation was An issue.
If I said now we're going to do
81
00:04:53,300 --> 00:04:57,100
the ceremony which comes from
the Eskimo people that I met in
82
00:04:57,100 --> 00:05:02,500
2025, you know, whatever it is.
But so mkp is now kind of on
83
00:05:02,500 --> 00:05:05,600
pause with these weekend events
and their attempted to create a
84
00:05:05,600 --> 00:05:07,900
healthy inclusive.
Way to handle the processes of
85
00:05:07,900 --> 00:05:11,600
the weekend and be respectful to
indigenous people.
86
00:05:12,500 --> 00:05:16,000
So threatened with lawsuits and
protest mkp USA canceled the
87
00:05:16,008 --> 00:05:19,300
weekend trainings until everyone
had more clarity of how to move
88
00:05:19,300 --> 00:05:21,600
forward so the good so good can
come out of this.
89
00:05:21,600 --> 00:05:26,300
I by hope but Spirit or claims
that mkp has not received
90
00:05:26,300 --> 00:05:29,500
permission properly from
indigenous tribes, the native
91
00:05:29,500 --> 00:05:32,700
people who did gift mkp what
they've been doing for 30 years.
92
00:05:33,300 --> 00:05:37,400
Spirit says it wasn't valid so
they write all their all at an
93
00:05:37,400 --> 00:05:42,400
impasse So approximately thirty
years ago, a Native American
94
00:05:42,400 --> 00:05:46,900
leader taught mankind project
Representatives, how to properly
95
00:05:46,900 --> 00:05:49,100
do a sweat lodge.
And, you know, there was a
96
00:05:49,100 --> 00:05:51,900
handing down there was a
teaching, but this organization
97
00:05:51,900 --> 00:05:57,300
today says that that person was
not a tribe leader and that they
98
00:05:57,300 --> 00:05:59,700
are the tribal leaders who only
can decide to do that and they
99
00:05:59,700 --> 00:06:03,100
wanted to stop.
So that's that's the big
100
00:06:03,100 --> 00:06:05,700
sticking point.
Now, hopefully this will all
101
00:06:05,700 --> 00:06:08,900
lead to an even better and WT
experience for everyone in the
102
00:06:08,907 --> 00:06:11,900
future.
But you know my biggest concern
103
00:06:11,900 --> 00:06:14,700
was not for me, not volunteering
this weekend but it was for the
104
00:06:14,707 --> 00:06:18,700
men who are going to come step
forward because, you know, this
105
00:06:18,700 --> 00:06:22,000
being in the news, this being
kind of a controversy, it puts
106
00:06:22,000 --> 00:06:25,200
a, you know, it definitely puts
a shadow across the whole event.
107
00:06:25,200 --> 00:06:29,200
And when I did the weekend, I
had no idea a sweat lodge was
108
00:06:29,200 --> 00:06:31,700
part of it.
You just go, you know, you kind
109
00:06:31,700 --> 00:06:34,100
of go in blindly and, and step
into the unknown.
110
00:06:34,300 --> 00:06:36,300
Phone and all that fear that
brings up.
111
00:06:36,500 --> 00:06:41,000
And you know just this this
culture Clash is just one of
112
00:06:41,008 --> 00:06:46,500
those fears that had not even
crossed my mind but America is a
113
00:06:46,500 --> 00:06:49,900
Melting Pot of hundreds of
cultures borrowing from other
114
00:06:49,900 --> 00:06:54,400
cultures is it's inevitable and
I think it can be positive to
115
00:06:54,400 --> 00:06:56,500
me, it's the evolution of
society.
116
00:06:57,600 --> 00:07:00,400
But it seems to me that so many
people feel some level of
117
00:07:00,400 --> 00:07:02,600
entitlement to never be
offended.
118
00:07:02,900 --> 00:07:06,700
And that's a big problem we have
today. you know, there were so
119
00:07:06,700 --> 00:07:09,300
many just silly questions and
some have obvious answers but
120
00:07:11,200 --> 00:07:14,300
Major League Baseball and the
NFL have only recently gotten
121
00:07:14,300 --> 00:07:17,300
rid of old bigoted names and
mascot images things that
122
00:07:17,300 --> 00:07:20,700
perpetuated negative stereotypes
and poured salt into Old Wounds.
123
00:07:20,900 --> 00:07:24,700
So you know as a society we're
moving forward, we're healing.
124
00:07:24,900 --> 00:07:29,300
But but again if if you're a
member of that hurt culture, if
125
00:07:29,300 --> 00:07:31,700
you were part of the people that
Society has been hurting and
126
00:07:31,700 --> 00:07:34,100
stepping on, I'm sure it all.
Seems like way too little and
127
00:07:34,100 --> 00:07:38,200
way too late.
I get that Centuries ago, people
128
00:07:38,200 --> 00:07:41,700
came to North America and saw
natives as less than them.
129
00:07:43,200 --> 00:07:45,500
The letter from spiritwood,
which I will link to everything,
130
00:07:45,500 --> 00:07:48,200
I'm referencing will be linked
in the show notes that letter
131
00:07:48,200 --> 00:07:51,900
from spirit, makes it clear that
native people are still hurting
132
00:07:53,200 --> 00:07:56,500
Now, to me mkp has been trying
to honor the native practices
133
00:07:56,500 --> 00:08:00,400
they use.
But it was not seen that way by
134
00:08:00,400 --> 00:08:03,900
all Native leaders.
Now, I'm recording this a couple
135
00:08:03,900 --> 00:08:06,300
days from Halloween and each
year, it seems that there are
136
00:08:06,308 --> 00:08:09,100
more costumes accused of
cultural appropriation and you
137
00:08:09,108 --> 00:08:12,000
know the wrong outfit can have
you called a racist and you
138
00:08:12,000 --> 00:08:13,900
know, to me it boy.
It just all seems like it's an
139
00:08:13,900 --> 00:08:18,700
attack on imagination and play,
but but again I recognize and
140
00:08:18,700 --> 00:08:20,800
know that I speak from a place
of privilege.
141
00:08:21,400 --> 00:08:23,200
So I could be wrong about
everything.
142
00:08:23,200 --> 00:08:27,500
I think that's okay.
We're all the growth is the
143
00:08:27,500 --> 00:08:30,700
point of this.
Conversation with myself and
144
00:08:30,700 --> 00:08:33,200
hopefully hopefully it triggers
some other conversations out
145
00:08:33,200 --> 00:08:36,400
there.
You have trying to clarify,
146
00:08:36,400 --> 00:08:40,299
cultural appropriation, can be a
maddening never-ending debate.
147
00:08:42,200 --> 00:08:43,600
In closing, I'll share
something.
148
00:08:43,600 --> 00:08:47,700
A friend of mine said, regarding
the mkp cancellations, there is
149
00:08:47,708 --> 00:08:50,800
no culture or ritual.
That is not derivative of
150
00:08:50,800 --> 00:08:55,500
others, but the white man is the
face of the Predator to so many
151
00:08:55,500 --> 00:08:59,500
other cultures, Hearing that
really helped me see?
152
00:08:59,500 --> 00:09:03,500
This from a different
perspective and and imagine the
153
00:09:04,600 --> 00:09:09,300
the decades, the centuries of
Oppression and another man said
154
00:09:09,600 --> 00:09:13,500
you can do the right thing and
still have it be the wrong
155
00:09:13,500 --> 00:09:16,700
thing.
And that can be a really
156
00:09:16,700 --> 00:09:19,500
uncomfortable challenging place
to be.
157
00:09:20,900 --> 00:09:25,000
So cultural appropriation, it's
confusing, it's blurry.
158
00:09:25,200 --> 00:09:29,100
I still don't get it.
If you get it and would like to
159
00:09:29,100 --> 00:09:32,600
educate me.
I'm glad to talk to you on a
160
00:09:32,608 --> 00:09:34,600
show or just privately if that's
what you prefer.
161
00:09:36,400 --> 00:09:39,200
Wherever you are discovering
real men feel please like

00:09:43,900 --> 00:09:44,600
good to yourself.
