Last November - 2021 - I stopped doing all the positive things in my life. I chose to dive straight into depression, solitude, and misery. I stopped doing this podcast. I stopped leading men's groups. I stopped being open to new coaching clients. I stopped exercising. I stopped every positive daily ritual I've developed over the years.

The exact circumstances of what started this dark period aren't important because there is always something we can focus on to our detriment. This life can be heaven or hell; it comes down to us; our outlook, perception, thinking, judgment, and actions.

I took minimal action for months.

I wanted to remind you and myself where I was a year ago because of the rapid change, resilience, support, and positive energy that is available to all of us - but not until we are willing to accept it.

Whenever you feel like shit, if you are under siege by your own thoughts saying you should check out of life early - do something for somebody. Make some effort of service for another human being. I find that always changes my mood and outlook.

Life is good. You are good. Please allow yourself to feel that truth.

If you need daily reminders to be of service, to share yourself, and better your mood - I recently discovered Do Good December - a monthly calendar of simple things you can do to spread more love and kindness. I've posted it to Real Men Feel Facebook and IG pages, and I'll make sure it is part of this episode's post on RealMenFeel.org if you want to track it down.

1
00:00:01,700 --> 00:00:04,800
Hello and welcome to real men.
Feel, this is your host, Andy

2
00:00:04,800 --> 00:00:07,000
Grant.
I'm also an author coach and

3
00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:09,900
healer.
You can visit v&e Grant.com to

4
00:00:09,900 --> 00:00:15,200
learn more about that.
Last November 20 21, I stopped

5
00:00:15,200 --> 00:00:18,100
doing pretty much all positive
things in my life.

6
00:00:19,300 --> 00:00:24,600
I consciously chose to dive
straight into my own depression

7
00:00:25,100 --> 00:00:30,300
Solitude and misery.
I stopped doing this podcast.

8
00:00:30,500 --> 00:00:33,800
I stopped bleeding men's groups.
I stopped being open to new

9
00:00:33,800 --> 00:00:36,900
coaching clients.
I stopped exercising, I stopped

10
00:00:36,900 --> 00:00:41,200
paying attention to what I ate.
I stopped every positive daily

11
00:00:41,200 --> 00:00:42,900
ritual that I've developed over
the years.

12
00:00:44,500 --> 00:00:47,500
I did not buy a single gift last
Christmas.

13
00:00:48,700 --> 00:00:51,600
And last December the week
before Christmas.

14
00:00:51,700 --> 00:00:54,300
I took a trip to San Francisco
for Metallica's 40th

15
00:00:54,300 --> 00:00:56,800
anniversary.
Now I had bought the tickets six

16
00:00:56,800 --> 00:01:00,800
months prior when I was actually
excited to go to the show to be

17
00:01:00,808 --> 00:01:06,400
alive but as the concert rolled
around, I had no interest in

18
00:01:06,408 --> 00:01:10,800
going and I would have just said
fuck it and stay home if not for

19
00:01:10,800 --> 00:01:14,500
the friend who was going to meet
me there and who's tickets I had

20
00:01:15,900 --> 00:01:20,500
That was really an early clue as
to what mattered it, what my

21
00:01:20,500 --> 00:01:24,100
path out of.
My darkness might be, but I'll

22
00:01:24,100 --> 00:01:27,600
come back to that.
Now the exact circumstances of

23
00:01:27,600 --> 00:01:31,300
what started this dark period
for me Isn't important because

24
00:01:31,300 --> 00:01:35,500
there's always something that we
can focus on to our detriment.

25
00:01:36,100 --> 00:01:39,200
You know this life can be Heaven
or Hell, really comes down to

26
00:01:39,200 --> 00:01:44,000
us.
Me, you my Outlook, my

27
00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:49,300
perception, my thinking, and my
judgments and actions.

28
00:01:50,400 --> 00:01:53,400
I took minimal action for
months.

29
00:01:55,200 --> 00:01:58,800
I wanted to share this with you
to remind you and to remind

30
00:01:58,800 --> 00:02:04,300
myself, where I was a year ago
because of the rapid change

31
00:02:04,300 --> 00:02:08,900
resilience, support, and
positive energy, that is

32
00:02:08,900 --> 00:02:15,300
available to all of us.
But not until we are willing to

33
00:02:15,300 --> 00:02:20,200
accept it.
Only seven months ago.

34
00:02:21,200 --> 00:02:24,000
I attempted to buy euthanasia
drugs online.

35
00:02:25,200 --> 00:02:28,200
Now today that that sounds like
a bad joke to me.

36
00:02:29,100 --> 00:02:35,000
I really can't imagine going
that far but I did There's a

37
00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:37,400
phrase.
I first heard in AA.

38
00:02:39,700 --> 00:02:41,800
I was sick and tired of feeling
sick and tired.

39
00:02:43,600 --> 00:02:47,100
So once I decided that enough
was enough for depression and

40
00:02:47,100 --> 00:02:51,300
hiding out, I started to say yes
to the offers of help.

41
00:02:51,800 --> 00:02:55,800
I started saying yes to helping
others, as well to being of

42
00:02:55,800 --> 00:02:59,900
service to better, self-care the
ultimate service.

43
00:03:01,200 --> 00:03:03,500
In July, I started weekly
therapy.

44
00:03:04,700 --> 00:03:06,900
I began monthly energy, healing
sessions.

45
00:03:07,300 --> 00:03:10,400
I got active in a new men's
group as a participant.

46
00:03:10,400 --> 00:03:13,300
Not as a leader, I began daily
exercise.

47
00:03:13,300 --> 00:03:16,800
Again, did an outstanding diet
program called wild fit.

48
00:03:17,200 --> 00:03:20,100
I took part in my first
fundraising campaign, the

49
00:03:20,100 --> 00:03:22,700
Covenant House, sleep out, which
was the prior episode of real

50
00:03:22,700 --> 00:03:26,200
men field.
Back to that, December trip to

51
00:03:26,200 --> 00:03:29,400
California to see, Metallica
that I just didn't give a shit

52
00:03:29,400 --> 00:03:33,100
about any more.
I went because I had promised a

53
00:03:33,100 --> 00:03:37,600
friend that I'd be there.
I was more concerned for him

54
00:03:37,600 --> 00:03:40,500
than myself and sometimes that's
a good thing.

55
00:03:41,800 --> 00:03:45,000
Whenever you find yourself
feeling like absolute shit.

56
00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:51,800
If you are under siege by your
own thoughts saying that you

57
00:03:51,800 --> 00:03:58,100
should check out of life early.
Do something for somebody else.

58
00:03:59,800 --> 00:04:03,500
Make some sort of effort to be
of service to another human

59
00:04:03,500 --> 00:04:08,000
being.
I find that always changes my

60
00:04:08,000 --> 00:04:16,500
mood and my Outlook Today, I'm
stronger fitter, healthier more

61
00:04:16,500 --> 00:04:21,200
grateful, and happier than ever.
I love my work.

62
00:04:21,600 --> 00:04:25,600
My job, my client, my guests, my
listeners, my future, my

63
00:04:25,600 --> 00:04:29,500
present.
I've lost all but five pounds of

64
00:04:29,500 --> 00:04:32,700
all the weight that I gained, in
my months of self-loathing, I'm

65
00:04:32,700 --> 00:04:35,200
going to start Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu in the New Year.

66
00:04:35,300 --> 00:04:39,700
I'm planning a trip to London
and and all good things cycle

67
00:04:39,700 --> 00:04:42,100
right back to Metallica for me
as this.

68
00:04:42,200 --> 00:04:46,100
Week I excitedly, but tickets
for their world tour.

69
00:04:46,100 --> 00:04:53,700
I've got shows in 2023 and 2024
Life is good.

70
00:04:55,700 --> 00:05:02,400
You are good.
Please allow the truth of that

71
00:05:02,900 --> 00:05:08,800
to sink in.
If you need some daily reminders

72
00:05:09,000 --> 00:05:12,700
to be of service to share
yourself and better your mood.

73
00:05:13,200 --> 00:05:17,800
I recently discovered do good,
December a monthly calendar of

74
00:05:17,800 --> 00:05:21,300
simple things you can do to
spread love and kindness.

75
00:05:22,200 --> 00:05:25,400
I've posted it to the real men
feel Facebook page and Instagram

76
00:05:25,400 --> 00:05:27,200
page.
I'll make sure it's part of

77
00:05:27,200 --> 00:05:28,800
