Grief, Shame, and the Dessert at 9AM: What Are You Trying Not to Feel? | Real Men Feel

Andy Grant shares a personal story of catching himself eating dessert straight from the refrigerator at 9:00 AM and asking, “What am I trying not to feel?” The question opens the door to grief and shame after the recent death of his longtime friend Steve, whom he’d known since high school and supported with energy work during a 10-month battle with cancer. Andy describes fearing he didn’t do enough and journaling the thought, “I’m sorry if I let you down,” then recording a raw video to normalize men expressing sadness, shame, love, and gratitude.

He explains that allowing himself to write, cry, and speak helped him feel better that day, encourages viewers to get curious about distractions like food or other escapes, and invites men seeking honest connection to join Authentic AF at realmenfeel.org/group.

ABOUT REAL MEN FEEL
Real Men Feel explores men's mental health, modern masculinity, relationships, purpose, authenticity and personal growth. Hosted by Andy Grant.

Giving yourself permission to prioritize men's mental health starts with acknowledging the feelings you usually avoid.

I recently found myself eating dessert straight from the bowl first thing in the morning, and it forced me to ask why I was really doing it. It was a simple moment, but it pointed to a deeper pattern of avoiding emotional expression. We often distract ourselves with small habits to keep from facing what is actually happening inside.

This is not about fixing everything overnight; it is about the journey of self-discovery. When we stop running, we open the door to processing shame and grief instead of letting them dictate our choices. It takes courage to sit with those uncomfortable truths, but it is the only way to move toward a more honest life.
