Eight Qualities That Make Men Less Effective
Eight Qualities That Make Men Less Effective Ep 427, November 6, 2026
Exploring Divine Masculinity: Stepping Beyond Emotions and Embracing Effective Choices
Andy Grant of Real Men Feel discusses divine masculinity, courage, integrity, responsibility, and purposeful action through a Hermetic framework that views masculine and feminine energy as present in everyone and suggests an ideal 70/30 mix for men, judged by results. He outlines eight patterns that reduce men’s effectiveness: choosing emotions over action, sensitivity over honesty, avoidance over strengthening, easy over honorable, drama over substance, vacillation over commitment, fear over bravery, and giving away decision-making.
Understanding Divine Masculinity
Let’s begin by clarifying what divine masculinity means. It’s not about being 100% masculine or balanced equally with feminine energy. Instead, it’s about recognizing the ideal distribution of energies, often described as 70% masculine and 30% feminine for men. This balance is essential, given the unique situations life presents us. By accessing both energies appropriately, we become more effective.
The Eight Choices That Impact Effectiveness
- Choosing Emotions Over Action: Emotions are crucial, but they shouldn’t overshadow action. Using superheroes like Thor from Avengers: Endgame as an example, we see the consequences of numbing emotions instead of confronting them and taking positive steps.
- Choosing Sensitivity Over Honesty: Sensitivity is valuable, but when it shields us from honesty, it becomes a limitation. Ray Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond provides a humorous yet telling example of how avoiding honest conversations can create unnecessary complications.
- Choosing Avoidance Over Strengthening: Simba’s journey in The Lion King illustrates the danger of avoiding responsibility. Embracing challenges and seeking support enables growth and empowerment.
- Choosing Easy Over Honorable: Acknowledging the pitfalls of choosing comfort over integrity using scenes from The Matrix, we learn that while easy paths might offer temporary relief, they often compromise our integrity.
- Choosing Drama Over Substance: Just as sitcoms thrive on drama, men sometimes create stories around small issues. By refocusing on facts and dealing with them directly, we conserve energy for more meaningful pursuits.
- Choosing Vacillation Over Commitment: Indecision, represented by Chidi in The Good Place, hinders effectiveness. Sometimes, making a choice, even an imperfect one, is more constructive than perpetual deliberation.
- Choosing Fear Over Bravery: Fear is natural, but bravery means acting despite it, as depicted in Saving Private Ryan. Encouragement can help others overcome their own paralysis.
- Giving Away Your Decision-Making: Emulating George McFly from Back to the Future, relinquishing control can cost you opportunities for voice and action.
Applying These Concepts
Reflect on where these patterns show up in your life. Identify situations you can tackle with honesty, decisive action, and integrity. These elements of divine masculinity not only improve personal effectiveness but also strengthen our relationships, giving partners space to express their femininity fully.
Call to Action
I encourage you to pick one of these patterns to focus on this week. Maybe you recognize yourself in Thor’s withdrawal, Ray’s comedic avoidance, or George McFly’s submissive tendencies. Name the pattern, acknowledge your feelings, and take one actionable step to shift it.
Conclusion
Divine masculinity isn’t about fitting into a one-size-fits-all mold; it’s about embracing the full spectrum of our human experience, evaluating our choices, and committing to actions that cultivate personal growth and meaningful connections.
